PROFESSOR BILLIE HUNTER

Professor Billie Hunter is the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Professor of Midwifery at Cardiff University, Wales UK and Director of a new WHO Collaborating Centre for Midwifery Development in Europe. She has been a midwife since 1979, working in UK NHS, voluntary sector and independent midwifery settings, before moving into education and research in 1996. Billie is well known internationally for her research into culture, emotions and relationships in maternity care and has published widely. Her recent books include: ‘Supporting Women for Labour and Birth: A Thoughtful Guide’ and ‘The Midwife’s Tale’. Billie is currently the Principal Investigator on the UK WHELM study of midwives’ emotional wellbeing, collaborating with RCM and midwifery researchers at Griffith University, Queensland.

Professor NICKY LEAP

Professor Nicky Leap is an Adjunct Professor of Midwifery at the University of Technology Sydney. For more than 35 years she has had a variety of roles in midwifery practice, education and research. She has published widely, particularly around the theory of ‘working with pain’ in labour. Dr. Nicky Leap is well known for her work supporting the development of midwifery continuity of carer models and group antenatal care in different settings. She is the co-author, with Billie Hunter, of The Midwife’s Tale: an oral history from handywoman to professional midwife and the highly acclaimed new Routledge textbook: Supporting Women for Labour and Birth: A Thoughtful Guide.
